The Gotland pony

  • About the breed

The Gotlandpony or 'Gotland russ' (or just 'russ') as its called in swedish is one of just two swedish native pony breeds, and the only one still remaining. The other was the 'Öland horse'. It got extinct in 1925, even if attempts have been made to recreate it now goes under a completely different name, 'Estoian bushhorse' (if translated directly from the swedish name).

Gotlandponies are claimed to descend from Tarpans that lived on the small island of Gotland that is on the South-Eastern coast of Sweden right after the last ice age. The Gotlandpony are a common sight at swedish ridingschools. It is known for its good trotting ability and are used in pony trotting as well as racing.

    Namingthemes

All ponies born here (in other words born from one of our mares) get the prefix 'Decorimas'.

Some of our mares have themes with their names, like some have where the colts are named by the begining letter of their sire, or that 50% of the name come from the sire and the other 50% from the dam. Each of these themes - if any - will be listed on the mares individual pages. Names should be swedish or at least scandinavian sounding names - feel free to contact me if you want me to help you with suggestions.
Obviously - I cant force anyone to use my namingthemes, but it would make me happy if you did :) <3
