Fungi

Fungi is a dilution recessive gene that fades/desurates red pigment. Mane and tail are diluted more than the hairs of the body. An important part of color identification is the absence of any hint of red in the coat. This can make it tricky to see if the Drabardi have a Rohit (red) drabardihue since the hue is not affected by this gene.

A typical (adult) fungi Drabardi has a fawn/taupe colour with near white mane/tail, but some can if bay based be much darker and appear brown with a almost white/silver mane and tail. The lower legs are either the same colour as the body or slightly lighter in tone. It's easy to confuse fungi with taffy (silver) colored donkeys. The fungi gene can also causes striped hooves, like an appaloosa horse.

Although occasional 'black' hairs can show in the mane/tail as with other red-based colours, the mane, tail/lower legs are never an "intense" black. Some donkeys have a very light coloured mane/tail, while others have a lot of dark, near black, or silver hair throughout the mane and tail.

Fungi on red

On an all-red base coat the donkey is born a pale beige, sometimes with a greyish or pinkish tint. Very often the donkey will keep this color throughout its life, but some turn slightly darker as adults. Not to be confused with Chardonnai.

Those genes that can interact with a red base color will also react in a similar way with fungi. There are similar shade variants within the color, like liver fungi or chocolate palomino fungi.

On a dark red base the donkey is born a yellowish beige with a dark contrasting "fake dun dorsal" stripe on the back (only noticeable if the donkey is born without the dun gene). It usually grows darker as it get older. Not to confuse with Taffy.

While using the same letters as Flaxen, the genes for Fungi is tied to the 'red allele' in a Drabardis genotype.
