Sooty

The donkey has darker hairs dispersed throughout the coat, starting from the topline and continuing down sides of the body, but not covering more than 10-15%. Sooty should always be blurred/blended out and never hard edged.

With bases like red and bay the sooty should be clearly visible against the base. For obvious reasons sooty doesn't show well on black coated Drabardis. Sooty can cause the mane and tail to darken at the roots and can also give the donkey a dark face mask. The concentration of dark hairs along the topline can blur into the base coat.

Sometimes the darker face mask can be confused with the dun mask, but sooty is lacking the dun characteristics and can at best only mimic a false backstripe at its minimal range (not shown on the examples).

There is no visual difference between heterozygous and homozygous sooty donkeys.
